Hauraki Cycle Trail

FAQs

The trail is the flattest and easiest cycle trail to ride in New Zealand with 4 sections allowing for a comfortable 3 to 4 day cycle trail ride. The trail is in close proximity to Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga and Matamata and is accessible from Miranda, Thames, Paeroa, Waihi, and Te Aroha.

The temperate climate enjoyed on the Coromandel Peninsula and the Hauraki Plans region ensures a great all year around riding experience.

The trail is 141km long, easy to ride trail (no hills) with a 1.1km long old railway tunnel to ride through. The trail showcases some of the beautiful scenery that New Zealand has to offer, from Pohutukawa trees on the Thames Coast through to lush green Waikato farm lands to areas rich in pioneering history.

A major highlight includes riding through the stunning Karangahake Gorge one of the “14 wonders of New Zealand”. The cycle trail follows the path of two historic railway lines, running from Thames to Paeroa, Waihi and to Te Aroha.

There are 4 sections on the cycle trail, each section takes 3-4 hours of cycling per day over four days. Some cyclists will ride sections 3 and 4 from Thames to Waihi in one day and then take 3 days to ride the trail.

Most people come from Auckland to Miranda to the start of the trail, but you can also start the trail from Waihi or Te Aroha. You can also ride the trail and be based at Paeroa and get shuttle bused back to Paeroa each day.

Our trips are self-guided and we cannot guarantee a shuttle will be available on all sections of the trail, this is due to the logistics of the trail. If you are concerned about being able to complete any of the sections of the trail, we suggest you hire an E bike as these bikes are ideal on the cycle trail.
